The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has launched an investigation into the alleged abuse of a dispatch rider by Hon. Alexander Ikwechegh, a House of Representatives member from Abia State. The incident, which occurred on October 27, 2024, in Abuja’s Maitama district, has sparked widespread outrage and condemnation.
A video surfaced online showing Ikwechegh allegedly berating and threatening Bolt driver Mr. Stephen Abuwatseya, who simply asked to be paid for his service. The lawmaker reportedly questioned the driver, saying, “Do you know where you are? Do you know who I am?” The driver insisted on his right to payment, stating, “I did a job for you, and you have to pay me, sir.”
Ikwechegh allegedly called the driver “very, very stupid” and issued a chilling threat: “I can make this man disappear in the whole of Nigeria and nothing would happen.” The Police Force has cautioned against using the Inspector-General of Police’s name or office to intimidate citizens, emphasizing that such misuse of authority undermines the office’s impartiality.
The FCT Police Command confirmed it is actively handling the case following Abuwatseya’s official report. Human rights advocates have joined calls for accountability, urging thorough investigation and justice. The Nigeria Police Force (Establishment) Act, 2020, emphasizes accountability, transparency, and human rights protection.
