Maiyegun, popularly known as “Jimmy,” “Market Boxer,” or “Omo Oloja,” made history by winning bronze in the men’s light middleweight (71kg) category at the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan.

 

Born on February 17, 1941, in Lagos State, Maiyegun’s legacy has inspired generations of Nigerian athletes. His passing has sent shockwaves through the sports community, with many paying tribute to his remarkable achievements.

 

Soultan’s Facebook post hinted at Maiyegun’s health struggles, revealing that he had been hospitalized again on July 14, 2024. The exact circumstances of his death are yet to be confirmed.
