The Nigeria Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has released data showing that all 774 local government areas (LGAs) in Nigeria received a total of N1.69 trillion in statutory allocations from the federal account allocation committee (FAAC) in the first half of 2024.
According to TheCable Index’s analysis, all 20 LGAs in Lagos State received more FAAC revenue than others, with Alimosho LGA topping the list at N11.13 billion. Ajeromi/Ifelodun and Kosofe LGAs followed closely, receiving N8.90 billion and N8.80 billion, respectively.
Other top recipients included Mushin, Oshodi/Isolo, Ojo, Ikorodu, and Surulere LGAs, all in Lagos State. In contrast, Ifedayo LGA in Osun State received the lowest allocation of N1.30 billion, followed by Ilejemeji in Ekiti and Bakassi in Cross River.
On July 11, 2024, the supreme court ruled that the federal government must directly disburse allocations to LGAs from the federation account, criticizing the practice of states creating caretaker committees. The court emphasized that LGAs should be democratically elected as required by the constitution.
