WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange is set to be a “free man” after a plea deal with US authorities, his wife Stella announced on Tuesday. Assange, 52, was released from a high-security British prison on Monday and flew to the Northern Mariana Islands, a US territory in the Pacific, where he will plead guilty to a single count of conspiracy to obtain and disseminate national defense information.
He is expected to be sentenced to five years and two months in prison, with credit for time served in Britain.
Stella Assange expressed gratitude to supporters who have campaigned for her husband’s release and said he would be a “free man” once the judge signs off on the deal. Assange’s legal drama has spanned years, with the US seeking to prosecute him for revealing military secrets.
