Two young people died when a deep hole they dug for mining collapsed on them in Obanliku Local Government Area of Cross River State.
The accident occurred at Shikpeshe, along Buya Road on Tuesday, March 19, 2024.
The two young people suffocated inside the mining hole, while three others were hurt and are now getting medical care in a hospital.
Local reports suggest that some illegal miners found a rare mineral called Tourmaline in the area and hired young people from the community to help them mine it.
The young people spent around four months digging the hole, but its depth was not confirmed and was dangerous.
The Cross River State Governor, Bassey Otu, expressed sympathy for the victims’ families in response to the incident.
