In a shocking move, Algeria has parted ways with their coach Djamel Belmadi after the team’s disappointing exit from the Africa Cup of Nations. Belmadi’s tenure ended prematurely on Wednesday, just a day after Algeria’s loss to Mauritania in their final group game.
The decision to sack Belmadi was announced by Algerian Football Federation President Walid Sadi, who revealed that the two parties had come to an amicable agreement to terminate his contract. “I met national coach Djamel Belmadi to discuss the implications of this bitter elimination, and we came to an amicable agreement to end our relationship and to terminate his contract,” posted Sadi on X.
Belmadi’s dismissal comes on the same day that hosts Ivory Coast also fired their coach Jean-Louis Gasset midway through the competition and Ghana let go of Chris Hughton after their own exit. These developments highlight the high stakes and pressure that coaches face during major tournaments.
Algeria, two-time winners of the Africa Cup of Nations, had high hopes going into this year’s competition. They clinched the title in Egypt in 2019 but had a disappointing showing in the last edition held in Cameroon, exiting in the group stage with just one point and one goal scored.
