With barely a year to go, the good people of Edo state are already counting down to the end of the present administration. It is beyond doubts that the development plans of the administration expected by the people has still not been met. insecurity, particularly the endless torrents of herdsmen attacks has taken savage over the people. But for all these (even though the present PDP led administration failed to protect and improve the state), most people are of the opinion it could have been a lot better if Dr. Dennis Osahon Aikoriogie comes in as the governor of the state.
Leaders are remembered by their legacies – the footprints they leave in the sands of time — which will speak even in their absence. Dr. Dennis Osahon Aikoriogie will be no exception to this reality. He now has the opportunity to bequeath Edo people with a credible, experienced, competent and effective leadership which will provide good works, guaranteeing the security of Edo state as well as development of physical and quality infrastructure, amongst other things.
The daunting challenges of insecurity facing Edo State requires a timely and strategic intervention from an experienced and visionary administrator. After putting in his all, it would be a misnomer for Edo people to elect a neophytes without proven standards of leadership; those who will resort to the experimentation of ideas and systems. Certainly, chemistry classes are over!
Edo’s next governor must not be one who, almost a year after inauguration, will be stuck with getting familiar with the buildings and itinerary at Edo state government House. He must not be one of those politicians who rush in hubris to be ‘Chief Executive Officer,” and certainly not one who sees the governorship position as an entitlement — a repayment for past favours. Rather, he must be a person who knows the grounds and systems; who will hit the ground running with interventions almost immediately to save Edo state.
Today, Edo state boils as Fulani Herdsmen threaten our very existence. They beat drums of war, one which will result in the loss of our ancestral land to the invaders. Edo’s next governor must be a symbol of peace and unity, a security expert, detribalised and generally accepted by the people of the state.
As leaders are the conscience of the society, our next governor must be visionary, resonating the feelings and pulse of the people. He must be an exemplary leader.
When we assess these qualities and conditions for he who will assume Edo’s governorship with brimming hopes, goodwill and the much needed fervour, Dr. Dennis Osahon Aikoriogie easily fits the description.
Dr. Dennis Osahon Aikoriogie’s antecedents ordinarily set him out as a patriot, who shelves his personal ambitions for the considerations and general well-being of Edo people. His charisma and peaceful disposition is a needed quality that can save Edo from disintegration and chaos.
