Former Anambra State Governor and Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has celebrated his 65th birthday by donating ₦10 million to St. Raphael’s Hospital in Umueri, Anambra East Local Government Area, while reaffirming his dedication to serving humanity.
In a statement issued on Sunday to mark his birthday, Obi said reaching the milestone was an opportunity to thank God, reflect on life and strengthen his commitment to improving the lives of others rather than organising lavish celebrations.
He noted that although birthdays in countries with stronger institutions and better living standards are often marked with elaborate festivities, Nigeria’s current economic challenges call for modesty and compassion.
According to Obi, despite Nigeria’s abundant human and natural resources, millions of citizens continue to battle poverty, unemployment, poor healthcare and limited opportunities, making it inappropriate to indulge in extravagant celebrations while many face hardship.
He stressed that birthdays should inspire people to consider how they can positively impact society.
“The greatest celebration of life is not what we receive from others, but the lives we can touch positively,” he said.
Obi explained that this principle has shaped his career in business, the corporate world and public service. He added that he has consistently urged friends and supporters to channel funds intended for birthday gifts and celebrations into projects that benefit society.
He said the initiative has, over the years, contributed to the construction of schools, hostel facilities and other educational and social infrastructure that continue to support underserved communities.
The former governor revealed that he began his birthday with a Thanksgiving Mass in Onitsha before visiting St. Raphael’s Hospital in Umueri, where he presented a ₦10 million donation to strengthen healthcare services in the rural area.
Reflecting on the visit, Obi said seeing patients receiving treatment reinforced his conviction that leadership should prioritise care for the vulnerable.
He noted that many patients may struggle to pay their medical bills but still deserve compassion, dignity and access to quality healthcare.
Obi described investments in healthcare and education as essential for national development, saying hospitals save lives while schools prepare future generations.
He also announced that throughout the remainder of the month, he will visit more schools and hospitals to make additional donations as part of his birthday activities and continued commitment to humanitarian service.
