Former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr Umar Abdullahi Ganduje, has said that Peter Obi of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) do not have the political strength in Northern Nigeria to defeat President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election.
According to Ganduje, the North remains the deciding region in Nigeria’s presidential contests, insisting that neither Obi nor Atiku possesses the grassroots network or regional influence needed to secure enough votes to challenge the incumbent.
“The North is strategic in every presidential election in Nigeria. With due respect to our friends in the opposition, neither Peter Obi nor Atiku Abubakar can mobilise enough support in this region to defeat President Tinubu in 2027,” he said.
The former Kano State governor also urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to tighten the requirements for registering political parties.
He argued that only parties with established nationwide structures, defined ideologies and genuine national presence should be allowed to participate in elections.
Ganduje’s remarks come as opposition parties continue consultations and political realignments ahead of the 2027 general election.
He made the comments during a public event in Kano on Monday while assessing the readiness and prospects of opposition parties in the race for the presidency.
