Fresh concerns over security have emerged in Anambra State after suspected gunmen attacked a police patrol team, killing at least two officers along the Awa-Ndiukwuenu-Ufuma Road on Sunday night.
The identities of the attackers were not immediately known as of the time of filing this report.
The incident comes after several months of relative peace in the state, following sustained security operations against criminal elements, including armed groups accused of operating under the guise of Biafra agitation.
According to reports, the gunmen ambushed police officers who were on patrol along the road, opening fire on them and leaving two officers dead at the scene.
A tricycle operator who witnessed the attack recounted the terrifying experience, saying he was travelling along the route when he suddenly heard gunshots ahead.
The witness said the intensity of the shooting forced him to abandon his tricycle and flee into a nearby bush for safety.
In a voice note shared after the incident, the visibly distressed rider narrated what he saw when he later returned to the road.
“After sometime, I came out of the bush and retrieved my Keke and continued my journey, then I got to the spot where the thing happened.
“Two policemen are lying on the road here, and their police van is parked by the roadside. I decided to make this voice note to post on the platform because I think one of the policemen is still alive, so that anyone who knows police authorities will tell them to go and save their members,” he said.
Efforts to obtain an official reaction from the Anambra State Police Command were unsuccessful.
When contacted, the command’s spokesperson, Tochukwu Ikenga, could not be reached as his telephone line was unavailable.
As of the time of filing this report, the Anambra State Police Command had not issued any official statement regarding the attack, the condition of any surviving officers, or efforts to apprehend those responsible.
The latest incident has sparked fears that violent attacks targeting security personnel could be resurfacing in the state after months of relative calm. Security agencies are yet to provide further details on the circumstances surrounding the ambush.
