The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has welcomed the judgment of the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, which ruled that former President Goodluck Jonathan is eligible to contest for the office of President despite previously taking the presidential oath of office twice.

In a statement issued on May 26, 2026, the party described the judgment as one that aligns with both the law and common sense, stressing that laws cannot be applied retroactively or retrospectively.

The PDP further described the suit challenging Jonathan’s eligibility as “vexatious” and a gross abuse of court process, noting that it was an unnecessary distraction that should never have been instituted.

According to the party, the court’s decision to impose punitive costs against the plaintiff was commendable and would serve as a deterrent to individuals seeking to disrupt democratic processes through frivolous litigation.

The opposition party also stated that the judgment, alongside the screening waiver earlier granted to Jonathan by the PDP, has now cleared the path for what it described as the former president’s “presidential rescue mission.”

The party noted that its primaries for the selection of candidates for various elective positions are scheduled to hold on May 28, 2026.
