Harry Maguire’s mother, Zoe, has described the decision by England manager Thomas Tuchel to leave her son out of the national team’s World Cup squad as “disgraceful.”
The 26-man England squad for the World Cup in the United States, Mexico and Canada was officially unveiled on Friday, with the former Manchester United captain notably absent from the list.
Before the official announcement, Maguire had already confirmed on social media that he had been dropped by the England manager.
The defender said he was “shocked and devastated” by the decision after what he described as a strong season.
“I was confident I could have played a significant role this summer for my country after the season I’ve had. I’ve been left shocked and devastated by the decision,” Maguire wrote.
“I’ve cherished every moment of wearing that shirt and representing my country over the years. I wish the players all the best this summer.”
Reacting to the development, Zoe Maguire publicly defended her son and criticised the decision to omit him from the squad.
Posting on Z, she wrote: “Absolutely disgusted.”
Responding further to Harry Maguire’s statement, she added: “You couldn’t have done any more. Hold your head high … Disgraceful.”
Maguire has been a regular figure in the England setup over the years and played key roles in previous major tournaments, despite facing criticism during parts of his club career.
His omission from Tuchel’s squad has already generated debate among fans and pundits ahead of the tournament.
