The United States President, Donald J. Trump, has once again taken aim at North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), describing the alliance as a “paper tiger” amid ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.
In a statement posted on his Truth Social platform on Friday, Trump revealed that NATO had reached out to the United States offering support following recent developments surrounding the Strait of Hormuz.
According to the president, he rejected the offer and advised the alliance to stay away.
“Now that the Hormuz Strait situation is over, I received a call from NATO asking if we would need some help,” Trump said.
“I TOLD THEM TO STAY AWAY, UNLESS THEY JUST WANT TO LOAD UP THEIR SHIPS WITH OIL.”
Trump further criticised NATO’s historical role in global security, accusing the alliance of failing to act when it mattered most.
“They were useless when needed, a Paper Tiger!” he added.
The remarks come at a time of heightened geopolitical tension tied to the ongoing Middle East conflict, with global powers closely monitoring developments around critical energy supply routes, particularly the Strait of Hormuz.
Meanwhile, Iranian authorities have announced that the vital shipping corridor has been reopened to commercial vessel traffic following developments linked to a ceasefire in Lebanon.
In a statement shared via X on Friday, Iran’s Foreign Minister, Seyed Abbas Araghchi, confirmed the move, stating that the passage through the strait has been declared fully open for the duration of the ceasefire under coordinated maritime guidelines.
The development signals a temporary easing of tensions in the region, even as diplomatic strains between Washington and its traditional allies continue to surface.
