NYSC Has Come to Stay — Ahmadu Ali Reaffirms Scheme’s Enduring Relevance

The pioneer Chief Executive of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Ahmadu Ali (Rtd), has declared that the scheme “has come to stay,” underscoring its lasting impact on national unity and youth development in Nigeria.

Ali made the assertion while receiving the current Director-General of the NYSC, Olakunle Nafiu, during a courtesy visit to his residence in Abuja.

Speaking during the meeting, the retired colonel noted that over five decades, the NYSC had continued to endear itself to Nigerians through its programmes, services, and widespread national presence. He emphasized that the scheme’s relevance has remained intact, strengthening the case for its continued existence.

Ali commended former Head of State, Yakubu Gowon, for his visionary leadership in establishing the NYSC in 1973. He described the initiative as an enduring national programme that has stood the test of time.

Highlighting its role in nation-building, Ali said the NYSC has significantly fostered unity by enabling young Nigerians to serve in states outside their places of origin. According to him, this exposure allows participants to experience diverse cultures and build relationships that promote mutual understanding.

“The scheme gives people the privilege to go to other states they ordinarily would not visit,” he said, adding that it equips youths with coping mechanisms and life skills acquired outside their comfort zones, thereby enhancing tolerance and cohesion among citizens.

Ali also praised successive administrators of the scheme for preserving the vision of its founding fathers, noting with pride that early skepticism by Nigerian graduates—who initially protested its establishment—has since given way to widespread acceptance, anticipation, and enthusiasm.

He pledged continued support and prayers for the sustainability of the programme.

In his remarks, Brigadier General Nafiu said his visit was to pay homage to the NYSC’s pioneer leader in recognition of the solid foundation he laid at the scheme’s inception. He acknowledged that Ali’s leadership had ensured the stability and growth of the NYSC for more than 50 years.

Nafiu further commended Ali’s administrative expertise, resilience, and wisdom in overcoming early challenges, stating that the scheme remains indebted to his enduring contributions.
