EASTER WITHOUT PAY: Lecturers, NYSC Members Lament Delayed March Salaries Under Tinubu

University lecturers and members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) across Nigeria have raised alarm over worsening financial hardship following delays in the payment of their March 2026 salaries and allowances by the administration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The situation, which coincides with the Easter celebration period, has left many workers struggling to meet basic needs, with affected individuals describing the development as insensitive, particularly during a major Christian holiday.

The issue gained public attention after a professor at Ahmadu Bello University, Abdelghaffar Amoka, voiced his frustration in a Facebook post on Friday.

“The month of March has ended and today, April 3, 2026, is Good Friday. Easter will be celebrated without March 2026 salary. That is how much the government care about the people. We are expected to MILT as usual,” he wrote.

Amoka’s claims were corroborated by lecturers from Usmanu Danfodiyo University and Federal University of Birnin Kebbi, who spoke anonymously, confirming that the delay had affected multiple institutions.

According to them, while salary delays have become increasingly frequent in recent months, the March delay is particularly troubling due to its timing with Easter.

“One would have expected that the government would ensure salaries are paid before Easter, considering its importance to Christian faithful,” one lecturer said. “This has become a pattern, but this particular delay shows a lack of consideration. People have families to cater for, especially during festive periods like this.”

Another lecturer warned that the recurring delays are gradually eroding morale within the academic community and could further strain Nigeria’s already fragile university system.

Similarly, members of the National Youth Service Corps have decried delays in the payment of their monthly allowances, describing the hardship as unbearable.

A corps member serving in Adamawa State recounted how she and her colleagues were forced to trek long distances due to lack of funds.

“Yesterday (Thursday), we had our CDS (Community Development Service), but many of us could not afford transport fare. Some of us trekked for about two hours just to attend,” she said. “This is not the first time allowances are delayed, but the hardship this time is extreme. We depend solely on this allowance to survive.”

Other corps members echoed similar frustrations, noting that the delay has disrupted their feeding, transportation, and overall well-being. The NYSC allowance, recently increased, remains the primary source of income for most corps members posted far from home.

As Christians across Nigeria mark Easter, affected lecturers and corps members say the delay in payments has dampened what should have been a period of reflection and celebration, raising broader concerns about economic management and workers’ welfare under the current administration.

Nigeria Politics Analysis

The recurring delay in salary and allowance payments reflects deeper fiscal and administrative challenges within Nigeria’s public sector. Analysts warn that such patterns, if unchecked, could lead to growing dissatisfaction among critical workforce segments, including educators and young graduates.

Beyond immediate hardship, the development raises questions about budget execution, revenue flow, and the government’s prioritisation of workers’ welfare. With inflation and cost of living on the rise, timely payment of salaries remains a key indicator of governance effectiveness.

If the trend persists, stakeholders fear it could trigger unrest within the education sector and weaken confidence in public institutions, further complicating the nation’s socio-economic recovery efforts.
