President Bola Tinubu has postponed his planned trip to Iperu in Ogun State, opting instead to begin a multi-state tour with a condolence visit to Jos following the recent wave of killings in Plateau State.
The president was initially scheduled to inaugurate operations at the Gateway International Cargo Airport but changed plans in response to the security crisis. His visit to Jos is aimed at commiserating with affected communities and assessing the situation firsthand.
Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang condemned the violence as “barbaric” and described it as an act of terrorism. He, however, assured residents that security agencies have brought the situation under control.
In response to the unrest, Mangu Local Government Chairman Emmanuel Mwolpun imposed a curfew across Mangu metropolis from 8:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. daily until further notice. Authorities urged residents to comply and remain vigilant.
Meanwhile, the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has ordered a large-scale deployment of security personnel to the state. He condemned the deadly attack in Angwan Rukuba, Jos North, which left several people dead, and called for public cooperation with security agencies.
The attack, which occurred on Palm Sunday, reportedly claimed at least 27 lives. In response to rising insecurity, several Catholic dioceses across Nigeria have adjusted their Easter Vigil services to earlier hours to avoid nighttime gatherings.
Despite the crisis, Easter celebrations will proceed nationwide, with the Federal Government declaring April 3 and April 6, 2026, as public holidays. The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, urged Nigerians to reflect on values such as love, tolerance, and unity during the season.
After his visit to Plateau, Tinubu is expected to continue to Lagos for Easter observances, before traveling to Ogun State to commission the cargo airport and other infrastructure projects. His itinerary also includes stops in Lagos and Bayelsa States, where he will inaugurate key projects.
Authorities continue to appeal for calm as efforts intensify to restore lasting peace in Plateau State.
