President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the expansion of the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas (PiCNG) to incorporate electric vehicles, marking a significant shift in Nigeria’s approach to sustainable transportation.
Following the approval, the initiative will now be known as the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas and Electric Vehicles (PiCNG & EV).
The development signals the federal government’s intention to broaden its clean energy transition strategy beyond compressed natural gas to include electric mobility solutions. The expanded initiative is expected to accelerate the adoption of alternative energy vehicles, reduce reliance on fossil fuels, and promote environmentally friendly transportation across the country.
Officials say the inclusion of electric vehicles aligns with global trends toward decarbonization and positions Nigeria to benefit from emerging green technologies while addressing energy efficiency and climate concerns.
