10 FILIPINO SAILORS, VESSEL CONVICTED, FINED $6 MILLION FOR IMPORTING 20KG OF COCAINE INTO NIGERIA

A Nigerian court has convicted 10 Filipino sailors and a commercial vessel for trafficking 20 kilograms of cocaine into the country, imposing a total fine of $6 million.

The judgment followed an investigation and prosecution led by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), which uncovered the illicit consignment aboard the vessel upon its arrival at a Nigerian port.

According to officials, the cocaine shipment was concealed within the ship and intended for distribution within Nigeria. The NDLEA described the operation as a significant breakthrough in its ongoing efforts to combat international drug trafficking networks operating through the nation’s maritime routes.

The court found the sailors guilty of drug importation and related offences under Nigerian law, holding both the individuals and the vessel accountable for the crime. In addition to the financial penalty, further legal consequences may be enforced in line with existing drug control regulations.

Authorities reiterated their commitment to strengthening surveillance and enforcement across Nigeria’s borders, warning that the country will not serve as a transit or destination hub for illegal narcotics.

The NDLEA also urged international shipping companies to ensure stricter compliance with global maritime and anti-drug trafficking standards to prevent similar incidents in the future.
