Middle East Crisis: Pope Leo XIV Urges Calm as Nigeria Alerts Citizens in Kuwait

Pope Leo XIV has called for restraint and dialogue amid escalating violence in the Middle East, warning that tensions involving the United States, Israel and Iran risk spiralling into a global catastrophe.

Delivering his Angelus prayer at the Vatican on Sunday, the pontiff voiced deep concern over the recent wave of military strikes and retaliatory actions across the region. He stressed that lasting peace and stability cannot be achieved through threats or weapons, which only bring destruction and suffering, but through sincere and responsible dialogue.

“Faced with the possibility of a tragedy of enormous proportions, I address to the parties involved a heartfelt appeal to assume the moral responsibility to stop the spiral of violence before it becomes an irreparable abyss,” the Pope said.

He reinforced his appeal in posts on X, urging world leaders to halt what he described as a dangerous escalation and allow diplomacy to take precedence.

His remarks come amid growing fears of a wider regional conflict following reports of coordinated U.S.–Israel airstrikes on Iran and subsequent retaliatory attacks.

As tensions mount, the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in Kuwait issued a safety advisory to Nigerians residing in Kuwait and Bahrain. The mission urged citizens to remain vigilant, follow official guidance from host governments, and stay calm.

The embassy encouraged Nigerians to closely monitor local news and official announcements from authorities in both countries, adding that it is maintaining close contact with community leaders. To improve communication, a dedicated mobile and WhatsApp line has been set up for inquiries and support.

In Abuja, Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs also called for de-escalation and restraint in the Gulf region. In a statement signed by its spokesperson, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, the ministry expressed concern over rising tensions and warned of potentially serious consequences for regional and global stability.

“Nigeria calls on all parties to exercise maximum restraint and refrain from actions that could intensify hostilities, and prioritise dialogue over confrontation,” the statement read.

The ministry further urged strict adherence to the United Nations Charter and the Geneva Conventions, emphasising respect for sovereignty, territorial integrity, and the peaceful resolution of disputes. It highlighted the need to limit the use of lethal force to prevent further civilian casualties, stressing that sustainable peace can only be achieved through diplomacy, mutual respect, and compliance with international law.

Nigerian authorities say they are closely monitoring developments and remain committed to protecting the welfare of citizens in the affected region, as religious and political leaders worldwide continue to press for calm to prevent a broader conflict.
