President Bola Tinubu has urged the newly appointed Acting Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, to provide firm, professional and fair leadership of the Nigeria Police Force amid growing security concerns nationwide.
The President gave the charge during a closed-door meeting with Disu at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, shortly after the new police chief assumed office as the 23rd indigenous head of the Force. Tinubu emphasised the need to strengthen discipline, boost inter-agency collaboration and restore public trust in policing, assuring Disu of his full support under the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
He said Disu’s appointment was based on his proven track record of dedication and discipline, recalling his service in Lagos during Tinubu’s tenure as governor. The President stressed that the protection of lives and property must remain the Force’s top priority and encouraged the new IGP to build on the experience of his predecessor to improve institutional performance.
Disu’s appointment followed the resignation of Kayode Egbetokun, whose exit was accepted by the President. The appointment takes immediate effect, pending Senate confirmation in line with the Police Act 2020, while the Nigeria Police Council is expected to deliberate on his substantive nomination.
At his official handover ceremony at the Force Headquarters in Abuja, Disu pledged to entrench professionalism, modernisation and intelligence-led policing. He declared that intimidation, shortcuts and abuse of authority would have no place under his leadership, adding that officers’ welfare would receive priority to enhance integrity and performance.
Meanwhile, Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun praised Egbetokun’s service, describing him as a source of pride to Ogun State and Nigeria. He also congratulated Disu, expressing confidence in his capacity to deliver focused, result-driven leadership and urging him to prioritise intelligence-driven operations, community engagement and stronger collaboration among security agencies.
