Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has spoken out after reportedly surviving an assassination attempt in Edo State.
Gunmen allegedly attacked the convoy of the former Anambra State governor on Tuesday. The incident occurred at the residence of former All Progressives Congress National Chairman, John Odigie-Oyegun, where assailants reportedly opened fire, leaving bullet holes in the gate and several vehicles.
In a video circulating online after the attack, Obi condemned the development, describing it as a troubling reflection of the nation’s democratic state.
“This is where our democracy has reached. A former governor, and you can see what happened in front of his house, where hoodlums came shooting,” he said.
He added, “This cannot continue. We have a country, and we are part of it. We cannot have terrorism and have officials in government terrorising citizens.”
The attack reportedly took place shortly after Obi, Odigie-Oyegun, and other political stakeholders attended the official declaration of Barrister Olumide Akpata into the African Democratic Congress in Benin City.
Footage from the scene showed visible damage to the estate gate and multiple vehicles, highlighting the severity of the shooting.
The National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, Yunusa Tanko, alleged that the attackers trailed the political figures from the ADC Secretariat to Odigie-Oyegun’s home before launching the assault.
Tanko described the incident as a failed assassination attempt aimed at the political leaders, noting that several official vehicles were damaged during the attack.
