The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has declared that he will only support candidates aligned with President Bola Tinubu’s agenda in the February 21 FCT Area Council elections, stressing that those opposed to the President will not emerge victorious.
Wike made the remarks on Saturday night in Abuja during the 60th birthday celebration of Senator Sandy Onor, describing his position as a responsibility tied to the administration he serves.
“I have a responsibility to support any candidate who supports President Tinubu to win,” Wike said. “It is also my duty to ensure that any candidate who does not support the President does not win. I owe no one an apology for that position.”
He emphasized that his support in the council elections would be based on loyalty to Tinubu’s vision rather than party affiliation.
Commending the celebrant, Wike described Onor as a dependable ally and loyal friend, noting that their relationship had endured challenging times. He added that he would continue working with him because of his steadfast support.
In a citation read by Prof. Anthony Eyang, Onor was described as having risen from academia at the University of Calabar to national politics through discipline, scholarship, and service.
Chairman of the planning committee, Senator Philip Aduda, said the event was a thanksgiving for Onor’s life as both a scholar and politician.
Former Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom, who represented former Abia State Governor Okezie Ikpeazu, described Onor as an icon and a leader ready for greater responsibility.
Former Attorney-General of the Federation, Kalu Agabi (SAN), praised Onor as courageous and intellectually sound, while Prof. Dave Imbua presented a Festschrift in his honour.
The book was unveiled by Ikpeazu on behalf of Wike and associates, alongside a reported ₦50 million donation.
