I Will Contest 2027 Election – Peter Obi Assures Nigerians

The 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has reassured his supporters that he will run in the 2027 general elections.

Speaking in Uyo at the OBIDIENT Conference and Official Declaration for ADC themed “Activating the PO Effect in ADC,” Obi said he had it on good authority that the federal government does not want him to contest. However, he insisted he would participate in the election regardless of any opposition, declaring that he would run even if the poll were held “in their bedroom.”

The former governor of Anambra State urged Nigerians to join him in rescuing the country for future generations, warning that decades of poor governance have left lasting consequences.

Obi criticized the current administration for accumulating what he described as unprecedented levels of debt, claiming that many of the loans would be repaid between 2045 and 2050, long after those responsible for the borrowing have left office.

Explaining his departure from the Labour Party, he said democracy must function properly. According to him, he was informed that as long as he remained in the party, the Independent National Electoral Commission would not recognize its leadership, allegedly due to pressure from the federal government. He maintained that he would be on the ballot in 2027 and vowed that election results must be transmitted electronically in real time.

Obi stressed that Nigeria must “get it right” in 2027, adding that anyone who fails to transmit election results appropriately would be held accountable.

He also promised that if elected, his administration would prioritize investment in education and healthcare, arguing that leading nations achieved progress through deliberate investment in human capital. He pledged to reduce poverty as a strategy to curb crime.

Obi said he plans to tour the country and visit higher institutions to assess challenges firsthand. He emphasized that those supporting his ambition must prioritize the nation’s future and citizens’ wellbeing.

On corruption, he vowed to significantly reduce the problem, claiming it would drop by 60 percent if leaders and their families avoid corrupt practices. Reflecting on his tenure as governor of Anambra State, he said he discouraged his wife from assuming the role of First Lady because she was not elected. He added that although he approved over 100 Certificates of Occupancy for government lands, neither he nor his family acquired any.

Also speaking at the event, Dr. Tanko Yunusa, Global Coordinator of the OBIDIENT Movement, urged Nigerians to mobilize nationwide ahead of 2027 and rally behind the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as a platform for transformation.

Similarly, Dr. Ben Smith, the Akwa Ibom State Coordinator of the OBIDIENT Movement, called for unity among members, warning that internal divisions could undermine their vision of a new Nigeria.
