Security agents on Thursday reportedly attempted to arrest the immediate past Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai, upon his arrival in Nigeria from Cairo, Egypt.
The development was disclosed by his Media Adviser, Muyiwa Adekeye, via a post on social media.
Adekeye stated, “Security agents today attempted to arrest Malam Nasir @elrufai as he arrived on a flight from Cairo. Malam El-Rufai declined to follow them without a formal invitation. They, however, seized his international passport from an aide.”
He did not specify the agency responsible for the attempted arrest.
In a short video circulating online, El-Rufai was heard saying, “Listen, nobody, not even the President, can tell me I have to do anything,” while insisting that the security operatives issue him a formal letter of invitation if they required his presence.
El-Rufai, a leading figure in the opposition African Democratic Congress (ADC), had earlier suggested that he might be arrested upon his return to the country.
Speaking to BBC Hausa on Wednesday, he said, “Four people we worked with in Kaduna have been arrested; so it’s only a matter of time before they come for me too.”
