The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Wednesday, January 28, 2026, arraigned Dr. Tersoo Joseph Loko, former Chairman of the Benue State Independent Electoral Commission (BSEIC), over an alleged N1.1 billion fraud.
Dr. Loko was arraigned alongside ten other defendants before Justice M. S. Abubakar of the Federal High Court sitting in Makurdi, Benue State.
According to the EFCC, the defendants are facing charges bordering on the alleged diversion and mismanagement of public funds totaling N1,100,000,000 (One Billion, One Hundred Million Naira), said to be connected to their period of service at the electoral body.
The prosecution alleged that the offences contravene relevant provisions of Nigeria’s anti-corruption and financial crimes laws. The charges were read to the defendants in open court.
Justice Abubakar is expected to take their pleas and rule on issues relating to bail, while the matter has been adjourned to a later date for further proceedings.
The EFCC reiterated its commitment to ensuring accountability in the management of public funds and prosecuting individuals found culpable of economic and financial crimes, regardless of status or position.
