Massive Winter Storm Halts Travel and Shuts Down Washington, DC

A powerful winter storm has prompted at least 20 states and Washington, DC, to declare states of emergency. Residents in the capital woke to several inches of snow blanketing streets and sidewalks, followed by heavy sleet.

Federal offices are closed on Monday as a precaution, while major airports in Washington, Philadelphia, and New York have canceled most flights. Flight-tracking site FlightAware reports that over 19,000 flights across the country have been scrapped since Saturday.

A massive winter storm on January 24 dumped snow and freezing rain from New Mexico to North Carolina as it swept across the United States towards the northeast, threatening tens of millions of Americans with blackouts, transportation chaos and bone-chilling cold. After battering the country’s southwest and central areas, the storm system began to hit the heavily populated mid-Atlantic and northeastern states as a frigid air mass settled in across the nation. President Donald Trump, riding out the storm at the White House, reassured the public on his Truth Social platform, saying officials are closely monitoring the situation and coordinating with states, urging everyone to “Stay Safe, and Stay Warm!”
