Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, has announced his decision to join the All Progressives Congress (APC), describing the move as a step taken in the interest of unity and faster development for the state.
Speaking on Monday at the Coronation Hall of the Government House in Kano, the governor revealed that he made the decision after broad consultations with political leaders and stakeholders across the state. He was joined by a large majority of Kano’s lawmakers—22 members of the State House of Assembly and nine members of the House of Representatives.
According to Yusuf, the choice to defect was not driven by party politics alone, but by a desire to work collaboratively and deliver tangible benefits to the people of Kano.
“We have chosen partnership over division,” he told supporters. “Political parties are just platforms; what truly matters is improving the lives of our people. Judge this decision by the impact we make in Kano.”
The event drew several top APC figures, including former party National Chairman Abdullahi Ganduje, Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, and House Committee on Appropriation Chairman Abubakar Kabiru Bichi.
Welcoming the governor, Kano APC Chairman Abdullahi Abbas described the defection as a bold and historic moment for the party in the state, assuring Yusuf of the party’s full support. Senator Barau Jibrin also urged his supporters to stand behind the governor to ensure progress and stability.
Ganduje, in his remarks, praised Yusuf as a progressive leader and declared him the new leader of the APC in Kano State, adding that the party’s leadership and members were fully united behind him.
The governor’s defection, along with that of a majority of state and federal lawmakers, is expected to significantly reshape Kano’s political landscape in the months ahead.
