Tinubu Congratulates Super Eagles on AFCON Bronze Medal Triumph

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated the Nigerian national football team, the Super Eagles, for securing the bronze medal at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament.

In a statement released on Saturday, the President praised the Super Eagles for bouncing back from the disappointment of their semi-final defeat to host nation Morocco last Wednesday. He commended the players for showing resilience and focus to end the tournament on a strong note.

Nigeria clinched the bronze medal after overpowering seven-time AFCON champions Egypt, winning via a penalty shootout following regulation time, during which the Super Eagles dominated proceedings.

President Tinubu noted that the victory once again highlighted the determination, persistence, and can-do spirit for which Nigerians are known.

“Despite their good run during the tournament, the Eagles lost the semi-final match to Morocco during the penalty shootout last Wednesday, and our people’s hopes of winning the championship were dashed,” the President said.

“However, our players remained undaunted, and exhibiting the resilience of the Nigerian spirit, their efforts have now paid off.

“We will all be proud of them as they receive their hard-earned bronze medal on Sunday in Rabat, Morocco.

“Thank you, our gallant Super Eagles. Thank you, our national team players. This bronze medal surely feels good like gold.”

The statement was signed by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, and dated January 17, 2026.
