The Labour Party (LP) has officially affirmed Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, as its national leader, while extending well wishes to former presidential candidate Peter Obi following his move to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
National Secretary Darlington Nwokocha said the decision was made during a National Working Committee (NWC) meeting on Wednesday, where key issues concerning the party’s stability, growth, and strategic direction were discussed.
“The NWC, in a unanimous decision, affirmed its recognition of Governor Alex Chioma Otti as the National Leader of the Labour Party,” the communique stated.
The party also recognized former Finance Minister Nenadi Usman as its national chairman and reaffirmed the April 4, 2025 Supreme Court ruling that Julius Abure’s tenure as LP National Chairman had ended. LP urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to ensure Usman and Nwokocha receive all rights and privileges in line with the court verdict.
“All congresses and the National Convention of the Party shall hold accordingly, in strict compliance with the Party Constitution. Members at all levels are therefore encouraged to actively participate in the congress processes,” the statement added.
The LP thanked its members and Nigerians for their continued confidence, emphasizing that the party remains united and committed to building a Nigeria founded on equal opportunity, social justice, and good governance.
The Labour Party, one of Nigeria’s main opposition parties, finished third in the 2023 presidential election with Obi as its candidate.
