Atiku, Amaechi, Obi Emerge Top Contenders for ADC’s 2027 Presidential Ticket — Momodu

Former presidential aspirant and publisher, Dele Momodu, has named former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, ex-Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi, and former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi as leading figures in the race for the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential ticket ahead of the 2027 general election.

Momodu, a former member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), disclosed this on Thursday while speaking on Sunrise Daily, a Channels Television breakfast programme.

According to him, Atiku currently tops the list of potential ADC flagbearers, citing his long political career and experience at the highest level of government.

“Today, if you ask me in ADC, there are prominent potential candidates. Number one on the list will be Alhaji Atiku Abubakar. He served as vice president for eight years and has been contesting for the presidency since 1993,” Momodu said.

He also highlighted Amaechi’s extensive political résumé, noting that the former Rivers governor has served as Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, governor for two terms, and minister for eight years.

Momodu further mentioned Peter Obi, pointing to his two-term tenure as Anambra State governor and his growing national profile following the 2023 presidential election.

The media entrepreneur urged ADC members and opposition figures to set aside personal interests and unite to challenge President Bola Tinubu in 2027, accusing the current administration of steering Nigeria toward a one-party system.

“We need the cooperation of everybody. That is why we call it a coalition. It’s not a one-man thing, and Nigeria does not recognize independent candidacy,” he said.

Atiku, who served as vice president from 1999 to 2007 under the PDP, left the party last year and later aligned with the ADC. Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election, recently exited the LP and joined the ADC. Amaechi, a former minister and outspoken critic of the Tinubu administration, was among the earliest high-profile politicians to identify with the party.

All three politicians were part of the group that formally unveiled the ADC as the platform for a broad opposition coalition ahead of the 2027 polls.
