Manchester United Name Darren Fletcher as Interim Manager After Amorim Exit

Manchester United have confirmed Darren Fletcher as interim head coach following the dismissal of Ruben Amorim.

The club announced on Monday morning that Amorim had been relieved of his duties after Sunday’s 1-1 Premier League draw with Leeds United at Elland Road. Tensions escalated after the match when Amorim criticised the club’s hierarchy during his post-match press conference, comments that ultimately overshadowed Matheus Cunha’s second-half equaliser.

In an official statement, United said:
“Ruben Amorim has departed his role as head coach of Manchester United. Ruben was appointed in November 2024 and guided the team to the UEFA Europa League final in Bilbao in May. With the club currently sixth in the Premier League, the leadership has reluctantly decided that a change is necessary to maximise the team’s chances of achieving the highest possible league finish.

“The club thanks Ruben for his contribution and wishes him success in the future. Darren Fletcher will take charge of the team against Burnley on Wednesday.”

Fletcher, who was appointed Under-18s manager during the summer, will now step up to lead the first team on an interim basis. The former United midfielder is expected to address the media on Tuesday ahead of Wednesday’s league clash with Burnley.
