Anthony Joshua is recovering and in stable condition after a tragic road accident on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway that claimed two lives, the Ogun and Lagos State governments have confirmed.
In a joint statement on Monday, officials from both states said the heavyweight boxing star and another passenger were rushed to a specialist medical facility in Lagos immediately after the crash. Doctors carried out thorough medical checks and confirmed that both survivors are stable and not in any immediate danger, though they remain under close observation.
The accident happened earlier in the day in the Makun area of Ogun State when the SUV carrying Joshua and three others collided with a stationary truck along the busy expressway. Sadly, two people lost their lives in the crash.
Authorities described the moment as heartbreaking, offering condolences to the families of those who died and praying for strength for them during this painful time. They also confirmed that Joshua is conscious and has been able to speak with his family.
Both the Ogun and Lagos State governments said they are closely following developments and ensuring that the injured receive the best possible care. They also appealed to the public to respect Joshua’s privacy as he recovers.
The incident occurred around 11:00 a.m., and video footage from the scene showed the visibly shaken boxer being pulled from the badly damaged vehicle. The crash came barely eight days after Joshua’s high-profile victory over YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul in their Netflix-backed fight in Miami.
Meanwhile, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) said preliminary investigations point to overspeeding and dangerous overtaking as the likely causes of the crash. According to the agency, the SUV appeared to have lost control during an overtaking manoeuvre before slamming into the parked truck.
FRSC Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed described excessive speed and wrongful overtaking as some of the leading causes of deadly accidents on Nigerian highways. He extended heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased and wished Anthony Joshua a quick and full recovery.
