Bayelsa State has been thrown into mourning following the death of its deputy governor, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, who passed away on December 11 after collapsing in his office in Yenagoa. He was 60 years old.
According to officials, the incident occurred around 1.30pm while he was attending to official duties. He was immediately rushed to the Federal Medical Centre in Yenagoa, where medical personnel attempted to stabilise him. Doctors later confirmed him dead despite efforts to resuscitate him.
Sources familiar with his routine say the deputy governor had maintained a demanding work schedule for years, often described as a workaholic who rarely took time off. His sudden collapse has raised concerns about the pressure placed on top public officials.
Born on September 5, 1965, Senator Ewhrudjakpo previously represented Bayelsa West in the Senate before becoming deputy governor in 2020. His tenure was marked by active involvement in governance and a reputation for diligence.
The state government is expected to release a formal statement, while condolences have continued to pour in from political leaders and citizens across the country, many expressing shock at the tragic loss.
