President Bola Tinubu has written to the Nigerian Senate, requesting its approval for the deployment of Nigerian troops to the Republic of Benin as part of a regional peace mission.
The request follows reports of an attempted military takeover in Benin, which has sparked concerns across West Africa. In his letter to the Senate, President Tinubu, who currently chairs the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, explained that the deployment is aimed at supporting efforts to restore constitutional order and prevent further destabilisation in the neighbouring country.
He noted that the mission would be carried out in collaboration with ECOWAS, which has already condemned the attempted coup and called for the protection of democratic institutions in Benin.
The President emphasised that Nigeria’s intervention is crucial to safeguarding regional stability and upholding democratic governance within the sub-region.
The Senate is expected to deliberate on the request in the coming days.
