Nnamdi Kanu’s bid to be moved from Sokoto prison hits setback

The Federal High Court in Abuja has rejected an ex-parte request by Biafra agitator Nnamdi Kanu seeking to be transferred from the Sokoto Correctional Centre to either Kuje prison in Abuja or Keffi prison in Nasarawa State.

Kanu, through the Legal Aid Council, had asked the court to order his immediate relocation without hearing from the Federal Government. He argued that being moved to a facility closer to the court—such as Kuje, Keffi, or even Suleja—would enable him to better pursue his constitutional right of appeal.

But Justice James Omotosho declined the request on Monday, ruling that the application must be converted to a motion on notice and served on all relevant parties so they can respond.

The judge set January 27, 2026, for hearing the motion.

Last week, Justice Omotosho also refused to allow Kanu’s younger brother, Prince Emmanuel, to represent him in court since he is not a lawyer.
