Jubilation erupted across Eruku community in Kwara State on Tuesday evening as 38 church worshippers, who had been abducted by gunmen last month, were finally reunited with their families.
The reunion brings an end to a harrowing ordeal for the victims and follows days of anticipation after the government announced their successful rescue. Hobnob News previously reported that the victims remained in official custody for medical and psychological care, despite having regained their freedom.
Official Handover
The final handover was formalized in Ilorin on Tuesday, with the freed abductees received by the Chairman of Ekiti Local Government Area (LGA), Awelewa Olawale Gabriel, from Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq.
In a statement issued Tuesday night, the Chief Press Secretary to the Ekiti LGA Council Chairman, Dada Sunday, confirmed that the handover marked the conclusion of a coordinated rescue operation involving both federal and state security agencies.
The abductees, who were seized during a special thanksgiving service at CAC Oke Isegun in Eruku on November 18, 2025—an attack that tragically claimed the lives of three persons—arrived in their home community at about 6:30 p.m. to a rousing welcome from jubilant relatives and community members.
Community Relief and Gratitude
Receiving the victims, the Chairman, Awelewa Olawale Gabriel, extended profound appreciation to all levels of government and security agencies for the decisive intervention.
“We appreciate the comprehensive medical care and provisions given to the abductees after their rescue,” Awelewa said.
The Owa of Eruku also lauded the joint rescue efforts, expressing gratitude to President Bola Tinubu, Governor AbdulRazaq, and the security agencies for ensuring the safe return of his people.
“Their reunion has brought relief to the community. Since the day of the attack, we have not had rest of mind,” the Owa of Eruku said, reflecting the trauma suffered by the community.
Focus on Border Security
The incident serves as a stark reminder of the persistent security challenges facing Kwara’s border communities, particularly in Ekiti LGA, which has recorded multiple abduction cases in recent years.
LGA Chairman Awelewa pledged continuous efforts to restore confidence, assuring residents: “We will leave no stone unturned in ensuring the lives and property of our people are protected through a robust security network.”
