Hobnob News reports that a police officer was shot on Thursday after unidentified gunmen attacked the convoy of former Anambra State Governor, Chris Ngige, along the Nkpor–Nnobi Road in Idemili North Local Government Area.
Ngige was not in the convoy at the time of the attack, according to his former media aide, Sir Fred Chukwuelobe.
Eyewitnesses said the assailants, disguised in police and military uniforms, opened fire on the pilot vehicle, injuring a police officer and carting away his rifle and uniform. The pilot car was left riddled with bullets.
A lady who attempted to record the incident was fatally shot, while a shop owner who rushed out to see what was happening was also hit. He suffered heavy blood loss but is expected to fully recover after surgery.
“There was no police officer killed. The escort leader who was shot is stable and has undergone surgery. The shop owner was lucky the bullets didn’t hit his spine,” an eyewitness told Hobnob News.
The Anambra State Police Command confirmed the attack. Spokesman SP Tochukwu Ikenga said a coordinated state-wide manhunt has been launched for the fleeing armed criminals.
Ikenga revealed that the white Mercedes-Benz SUV stolen by the attackers was recovered after a joint police pursuit involving Tactical Operatives, the Rapid Response Squad (RRS), and the Special Anti-Cultism Unit (SPACS).
The police intercepted the fleeing attackers, engaging them in a gun battle that forced them to abandon the stolen vehicle.
Mr. Ikenga added that the injured officer is in stable condition and receiving treatment.
He assured the public that investigations are ongoing and updates will follow as the manhunt intensifies.
