Fighters from the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) attacked a Nigerian military convoy in Borno State on Friday night, abducting a serving brigade commander and killing several soldiers, including members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF), HumAngle reports.
The kidnapped general was reportedly leading the troops during the ambush. If verified, this would mark the first known case of an extremist group in Nigeria capturing a serving general directly from the frontline. While insurgents have previously killed senior military officers, abductions of this level are extremely rare.
Military officials have yet to release an official statement on the incident, and casualty numbers remain unconfirmed. Lieutenant Colonel Onyechi Anele, spokesperson for the Nigerian Army, has not responded to requests for comment.
