Man City Thrash Liverpool, Close Gap on Premier League Leaders Arsenal

Manchester City marked Pep Guardiola’s 1,000th game in management with a commanding 3-0 victory over Liverpool, cutting Arsenal’s lead at the top of the Premier League to just four points.

Erling Haaland made amends for an early missed penalty by heading home his 99th Premier League goal, before Nico Gonzalez’s deflected shot and a stunning strike from Jeremy Doku sealed the win for the champions.

The result leaves Liverpool reeling, with four defeats in their last five league outings — a run that has seen the defending champions drop to eighth place, eight points adrift of the summit.

Arsenal’s 10-match winning streak ended in a 2-2 draw at Sunderland earlier on Saturday, giving City the perfect opportunity to close the gap. Guardiola’s men, who have now won 11 of their last 14 matches in all competitions, took full advantage.

Liverpool’s recent victories over Aston Villa and Real Madrid had sparked hopes of a resurgence, but they were outclassed at the Etihad. Conor Bradley, impressive in midweek against Real’s Vinicius Junior, struggled to contain Doku, whose pace and creativity proved decisive.

After Ibrahima Konaté’s clearance ricocheted off Bradley, Doku rounded Giorgi Mamardashvili before being clipped by the Liverpool goalkeeper. Though referee Chris Kavanagh initially waved play on, VAR awarded the penalty. Mamardashvili, however, saved Haaland’s spot-kick to keep Liverpool briefly alive.

City remained dominant, and Haaland eventually broke the deadlock on 29 minutes, looping a header from Matheus Nunes’ cross beyond Mamardashvili. Liverpool thought they had equalized when Virgil van Dijk headed home from a corner, but Andy Robertson was ruled offside for interfering with play.

Moments later, Gonzalez’s deflected strike doubled City’s lead before Doku capped a scintillating performance by cutting inside Konaté and curling home a magnificent third from outside the box.

Cody Gakpo and Mohamed Salah missed chances to pull one back, while £125 million signing Alexander Isak remained on the bench as manager Arne Slot cited fitness concerns.

Liverpool’s decision to overhaul their title-winning squad with a £450 million spending spree is increasingly under scrutiny, as the Reds now face a fight just to stay in the top-four race rather than challenge for the title.
