International observers and civil society organisations have praised the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the transparent, efficient, and peaceful conduct of the ongoing Anambra State Governorship Election, describing the process as credible and well-managed.
This was contained in an electronically signed statement released by the Chief Press Secretary to the INEC Chairman, Mr. Dayo Oketola, and made available to Hobnob News on Saturday.
According to the statement, reports from the INEC Situation Room indicated smooth operations, improved voter turnout compared to the 2021 election, and a calm atmosphere across polling units in the state.
Observers attributed the seamless conduct to INEC’s enhanced logistics, deployment of technology, and the leadership of the Commission’s Chairman, Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan (SAN).
Ambassador Dr. Emmanuel Nkweke of the International Association of World Peace Advocates commended INEC’s preparedness and professionalism.
“The process has been peaceful and well-managed. Accreditation is smooth, the BVAS is functioning effectively, and INEC officials have been courteous and efficient,” Dr. Nkweke said while monitoring polling units in Awka.
He also lauded the security agencies for their professionalism and coordination.
“The environment is calm and secure. We observed up to seven police officers at some polling units, and their conduct has been exemplary. The collaboration among security agencies deserves commendation,” he added.
Addressing speculations about vote buying, Dr. Nkweke stated that no such incidents were observed in areas covered by his team.
“As international observers, we report what we see, not rumours. So far, this election has been peaceful and credible,” he said.
Civil society organisations also expressed satisfaction with INEC’s early deployment of materials and personnel.
Director of Programmes at Yiaga Africa, Ms. Cynthia Mbamalu, confirmed that observers recorded early arrivals of election materials and officials.
“Our observers were up early to monitor the arrival times, and materials reached polling units as early as 7:34 a.m. in Amawbia, Awka South. Voting commenced by 8:30 a.m. as stipulated by the Electoral Act, showing INEC’s readiness and efficiency,” Mbamalu said.
A member representing Aguata Federal Constituency, Mr. Dominic Okafor, also commended INEC after casting his vote at Polling Unit 004, Umuechefu Hall, Igboukwu.
“I must commend the INEC Chairman and his team. The officials arrived on time, the BVAS is functioning properly, and the process has been seamless so far. Voters are conducting themselves peacefully, and participation is impressive,” he said.
Similarly, the Chairman of Orumba South Local Government Area, Mr. Shedrack Azubuike, described the election as peaceful and well-coordinated.
“The officials are efficient, and citizens are turning out responsibly to exercise their civic duties. This is how democracy should operate,” he stated.
Reaffirming INEC’s commitment to credible elections, Professor Amupitan said the Commission remains dedicated to ensuring every valid vote counts.
“Our duty is to the Nigerian people. INEC is committed to ensuring that every valid vote counts and that the process remains credible, transparent, and peaceful,” the statement quoted him as saying.
