Fear has gripped residents of Faruruwa village in Shanono Local Government Area of Kano State after gunmen suspected to be bandits from neighbouring Katsina State launched a deadly attack on the community, killing one person and carting away several livestock.
The attack, which occurred around 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, threw the quiet rural settlement into chaos as the assailants, numbering over 70 and riding on more than 25 motorcycles, stormed the village in a coordinated assault.
Eyewitnesses told Hobnob News that each motorcycle carried about three armed men who began shooting sporadically to instil fear among residents before looting shops and rustling animals.
“They first attacked a phone shop, broke into several stores, and made away with handsets and other valuables,” one resident recounted.
Another witness, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed that the attackers killed a man identified as Lado in the Yanlanba area of the village.
“The gunmen came in large numbers, stole our cows, and fled before the police arrived. We are living in fear and calling for urgent security intervention before things get worse,” he said.
Residents lamented that the renewed wave of attacks has left the community traumatised, appealing to security agencies to strengthen surveillance and deploy more personnel to the area to forestall further violence.
As of the time of filing this report, security authorities in Kano had yet to release an official statement on the incident. However, local sources confirmed that the deceased has been buried according to Islamic rites.
The attack has raised fresh concerns over the increasing infiltration of bandits from Katsina and neighbouring states into rural communities in Kano, heightening fears about the effectiveness of border security and intelligence operations in the region.
