Tragedy in Lokoja: Kogi Varsity Lecturer Crushed to Death by Trailer in Felele Community

A tragic accident has claimed the life of a lecturer at the Federal University, Lokoja, throwing the academic community into mourning.

The deceased, identified as Mrs. Kemi Emmanuel, a lecturer in the Department of Theatre Arts, lost her life on Wednesday after being hit by a speeding trailer along the Felele–Crusher axis of Lokoja, Kogi State.

Confirming the incident on Thursday, the Kogi State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Mr. Tenimu Etuku, described the occurrence as “very sad and unfortunate.”

According to him, the fatal crash occurred around 3:30 p.m., when Mrs. Emmanuel fell off a commercial motorcycle (okada) and was subsequently crushed by a heavy-duty truck.

“Our rescue team responded promptly and rushed the victim to the Kogi State Specialist Hospital, where she was confirmed dead. Her body has been deposited at the hospital’s mortuary,” Etuku told Hobnob News in a phone interview.

The FRSC commander expressed concern over the reckless conduct of the motorcycle rider and emphasized the need for strict compliance with traffic regulations to prevent such avoidable tragedies.

This heartbreaking incident adds to the growing number of fatal accidents along the Felele–Lokoja highway, notorious for frequent truck-related crashes.

In May 2025, no fewer than 19 people, including five children, lost their lives in a multiple crash along the Obajana–Lokoja road. Similarly, in April 2025, six people were confirmed dead in another crash along the Lokoja–Abuja expressway, while in October, ten others perished in a separate accident on the same route.

Concerned residents and students have renewed calls for urgent government intervention. Many are urging the Kogi State Government to restrict daytime movement of heavy-duty trucks within the city, suggesting they should only be allowed to pass after 9:00 p.m.

The tragic death of Mrs. Emmanuel serves as another grim reminder of the urgent need for stronger road safety measures and better enforcement of traffic laws across Kogi State.
