Nigeria, South Africa Move to Ease Visa Restrictions, Deepen Ties

Nigeria and South Africa have agreed to simplify visa processes for business travellers as part of efforts to remove restrictions affecting movement between both countries.

This was part of the resolutions reached at a high-level political consultation held Tuesday in Abuja, led by Nigeria’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Amb. Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, and South Africa’s Ms Thandi Moraka of the Department of International Relations and Cooperation.

According to a joint communique, both sides pledged to tackle challenges hindering economic integration and reaffirmed commitments to cooperation in trade, investment, defence, energy, and cultural exchange.

They also welcomed the finalisation of a Memorandum of Understanding on an Early Warning Mechanism to enhance coordination on consular and migration issues, streamline travel, and boost social and business links.

The meeting further reviewed progress in transport and standardisation cooperation, noting the recent signing of an Air Traffic Services MoU between Nigeria and South Africa, and agreed that another MoU between the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) and the South African Bureau of Standards (SABS) would be signed in March 2025.

Both countries also highlighted their growing collaboration in the film industry, as outlined in a 2021 Audio-Visual Cooperation Agreement, which promotes joint productions, investments, and technical exchanges.
