Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun has approved the provisional redeployment of two senior police officers, pending ratification by the Police Service Commission (PSC).
An internal signal from Force Headquarters, Abuja, revealed that Commissioner of Police (CP) Miller Gajere Dantawaye has been assigned to the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), while Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Wilson Aniefiok Akpan has been posted to Kogi State.
The directive, referenced TH.5361/FS/FHQ/ABJ/SUB.6/213, emphasized that the postings remain subject to PSC confirmation and that officers should not wear ranks higher than their current grade until approval is granted.
“Posting of Senior Officers: The Inspector-General of Police has ordered the provisional posting of the following officers as indicated—To CP FCT: Compol Miller Gajere Dantawaye; To CP Kogi: Decompol Wilson Aniefiok Akpan—pending PSC approval,” the signal read.
This move effectively marks the removal of CP Ajao Saka Adewale as FCT Commissioner of Police. Adewale, who took office in March 2025 following the redeployment of AIG Tunji Disu to head the Special Protection Unit, now makes way for Dantawaye, who previously led the Kogi State Police Command.
The reshuffle comes barely a week after human rights activist Omoyele Sowore publicly demanded Adewale’s dismissal over his handling of investigations into the murder of Arise News producer Somtochukwu “Sommie” Maduagwu and a security guard, Barnabas Danlami.
The tragic incident occurred on September 29, 2025, when over 15 armed robbers invaded a 16-apartment building in the Katampe district of Abuja around 3 a.m. Sommie, 29, reportedly jumped from her third-floor apartment while trying to escape and was later confirmed dead at Maitama General Hospital at about 4:30 a.m.
Although early reports alleged medical negligence, the FCTA later clarified that she was already deceased before reaching the hospital. Police subsequently announced the arrest of 12 suspects linked to the attack.
CP Adewale had earlier spoken on the case during an interview with Arise News, prompting Sowore’s scathing reaction. In an October 2 Facebook post titled “Still on Arise News Producer Somtochukwu Maduagwu ‘Sommie’s’ Tragic Death: The Commissioner of Police of the FCT, Wale Ajao and the Posture of Failure,” Sowore accused Adewale of incompetence and poor crisis management.
He criticized the Commissioner for admitting that armed robbers operated freely for 90 minutes in central Abuja without police response, calling the statement “a shameful reflection of leadership failure.”
Sowore wrote:
“What struck me about CP Wale Ajao during his Arise News interview wasn’t his words, but the awards behind him — symbols of empty recognition. Yet, he casually confessed that armed robbers operated for 1 hour 30 minutes without police intervention.”
He further described Adewale’s demeanor during the interview as evidence of “how broken Nigeria’s security and emergency systems have become,” adding that “in any serious police force, he would have been fired immediately after that interview.”
