The Zone 5 Police Command has commenced full enforcement of the ban on unauthorized use of sirens and tinted glass permits across Edo and Delta States.
In a statement issued by the Zonal Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tijani Momoh, the command said the exercise aligns with directives from the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, and is backed by the Motor Vehicles (Prohibition of Tinted Glass) Act, 2004.
Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Zone 5, Salma-Dogo Garba, stressed that the enforcement will also cover the misuse of revolving lights, Police SPY plates, unallocated official number plates, and unregistered vehicles.
Motorists with tinted vehicles are advised to register through www.possap.gov.ng before proceeding to their respective state command headquarters for physical verification. Those unwilling to obtain a permit are directed to remove the tints or replace them with transparent glasses as stipulated by law.
The AIG cautioned officers to conduct the exercise with professionalism, warning against harassment or extortion of motorists. He added that erring officers, along with their supervisors, will be sanctioned accordingly.
Garba urged the public to cooperate with the Police, emphasizing that the measures are designed to enhance security and public safety. Residents are also encouraged to report misconduct by officers to the nearest station, the command’s Complaint Response Units, or directly to the ZPPRO.
The Inspector-General of Police had earlier announced that strict enforcement of tinted glass permits would commence nationwide, requiring all vehicles with tinted windows—whether factory-fitted or aftermarket—to present valid and verifiable permits on demand.
