The Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) has announced that power generation on the National Grid has fallen to 3,200 megawatts (MW), following disruptions caused by the strike action of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN).
According to NISO, the industrial action led to severe gas shortages, cutting generation from over 4,300 MW. To stabilise supply, the operator said it activated contingency measures, including ramping up output from major hydro plants, which added more than 400 MW to help offset losses from gas-fired stations.
The statement explained that real-time load balancing is ongoing to match supply with demand and prevent system frequency collapse. It added that reserve monitoring and reactive power compensation have been reinforced to protect grid integrity.
NISO further disclosed that selective load shedding is being deployed only as a last resort to avoid a nationwide collapse while ensuring fair power distribution. These interventions, it said, have limited the impact of the strike, kept the system secure, and ensured supply to critical facilities.
The agency reaffirmed its commitment to proactive grid management, operational resilience, and global best practices to guarantee a stable and reliable electricity supply across the country.
