Maryamu Idris Appointed as Nigeria’s OPEC National Representative

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd.) has congratulated Maryamu Idris, Managing Director of NNPC Trading Limited, on her appointment as Nigeria’s National Representative to the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC).

The announcement, made via NNPC’s official X handle on Wednesday, described Idris’s new role as a major milestone in advancing Nigeria’s representation within the influential bloc of oil-producing nations.

“We congratulate Maryamu Idris, Managing Director of NNPC Trading Limited, on her appointment as the National Representative for Nigeria at OPEC,” the statement read.

Idris currently serves as the Managing Director of NNPC Trading Limited while also holding the distinguished position of Nigeria’s OPEC National Representative.

Her extensive career in the energy sector includes leading Pricing and Valuation in NNPC’s Crude Oil Marketing Division, serving as Technical Advisor to Nigeria’s OPEC Delegation, and playing a key role in Nigeria’s engagement with the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI). She also contributed to oil sector reforms through her work with the Bureau of Public Enterprises and the Oil and Gas Implementation Committee (OGIC).

An alumnus of the University of Abuja with a Bachelor’s degree in Economics, Idris further holds a Master’s degree in Energy Economics from the University of Dundee, Scotland, United Kingdom.

Her appointment is expected to strengthen Nigeria’s voice in discussions on production quotas, pricing stability, and sustainable energy policies amid global oil market volatility.

In her dual roles, Idris will serve as Nigeria’s principal technical liaison within OPEC and as a member of OPEC’s Economic Commission Board (ECB), contributing to critical deliberations and policy recommendations. She will also collaborate closely with the OPEC Governor, NNPC Ltd., the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), and the Ministry of Petroleum Resources to ensure Nigeria’s energy interests are effectively represented.

According to Hobnob News, her appointment is seen as a crucial step in reinforcing Nigeria’s commitment to OPEC’s framework, particularly as the country balances production quotas with its capacity and growth ambitions.
