Four people were killed and about 15 others injured on Thursday night when gunmen suspected to be cultists attacked mourners at a burial ceremony in Ezi Village, Ogidi, Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State.
The attack occurred during a wake for an 18-year-old boy, ahead of his burial scheduled for Friday.
A community source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the mourners were gathered to honour the deceased and were drinking and smoking when gunmen arrived and opened fire. “The suspicion is that the deceased was a cult member, and rival members targeted the ceremony knowing his associates would be present,” the source added.
Four people were killed instantly, while about 15 others sustained gunshot injuries and were rushed to hospital for medical attention.
The Anambra State Police Command confirmed the incident. Spokesperson SP Tochukwu Ikenga said, “The Command was alerted following a distress call late on 11th September 2025 that armed men suspected to be cultists had invaded a burial ceremony at Ezi Village, Ogidi. They opened fire on attendees, killing four and injuring 15. Police operatives from Ogidi Division quickly restored order and evacuated victims to hospitals.”
He added that 16 spent cartridges were recovered at the scene and a discreet investigation has been launched to identify and apprehend the perpetrators. Preliminary findings suggest the attack stemmed from a clash between rival cult groups.
State Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, condemned the attack, assuring residents that the police remain committed to eliminating cult-related violence and other criminal activities. The public has been urged to remain calm, security-conscious, and report any suspicious movements or persons to the nearest police station.
