A leadership crisis in Iyanomo Community, Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area of Edo State, has claimed the lives of two men, sparking a swift intervention from the state government.
The victims, identified as Eboh Enomwa and Stephen Imaghodo, were killed last week following violent clashes between rival factions over control of the community.
Confirming the incident in a statement on Monday, Governor Monday Okpebholo’s Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, said the government has ordered a full-scale investigation into the killings.
The probe is being led by the Edo State Special Security Squad, codenamed “Operation Flush Out Cultists and Kidnappers”, in collaboration with security agencies and community leaders.
On Saturday, the investigative team, headed by CSP Osaro Roberts (Government House Chief Security Officer) and Okoh Saturday (Principal Security Officer to the Governor), visited Iyanomo to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
Speaking during the visit, the squad’s Secretary, Barr. John Izegaebe, condemned the violence, stressing that the government will not tolerate communal clashes, cultism, or lawlessness.
“Our findings so far point to a leadership tussle between two rival factions in Iyanomo, which degenerated into violence and ultimately claimed the lives of two men. This is unacceptable,” Izegaebe said.
“The Governor has directed us to ensure that all those involved are identified, arrested, and prosecuted. No one is above the law.”
He extended condolences to the bereaved families while assuring residents that justice will be served.
Community members, who welcomed the security team with relief, expressed appreciation for the government’s quick response. They also appealed for continuous government presence to prevent further bloodshed and restore lasting peace.
