A former chairmanship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Yewa North Local Government during the 2021 council elections, Kehinde Akinde, has officially resigned from the party.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, Akinde expressed profound disappointment over what he described as the declining state of the PDP at the national, state, and local government levels.
“The one-time noble party I cherished so much has become a shadow of itself,” he said. “From manipulative divisions at the national level to injustices meted out to members at the grassroots, it has become impossible to continue in this quagmire.”
Akinde stressed that his decision was not made hastily, noting that it followed “critical analysis and due consultation with our supporters at home and in the diaspora.”
Although he did not disclose his next political destination, Akinde hinted that his future path would align with his values and those of his followers.
“Our next political move will be determined by God’s directive in line with our philosophical value of good governance for the betterment of our people,” he stated.
His resignation comes amid a wave of defections that has rocked the Ogun State chapter of the PDP in recent months. Internal crises, ranging from leadership tussles to accusations of unfair treatment of loyal members, have triggered several high-profile exits.
In July, former Ogun PDP chairman, Dr. Sikirulahi Ogundele, and the party’s 2023 deputy governorship candidate, Abdulkabir Akinlade, defected with hundreds of supporters to the All Progressives Congress (APC), citing a loss of confidence in the PDP’s leadership.
